Two pieces of diamond jewellery can look similar and have very different prices. Knowing what drives cost helps you compare fairly, avoid overpaying and decide where to spend your budget.
What affects the price of diamond jewellery?
The price of a piece is a combination of the diamond or diamonds, the metal, the design and construction, and the seller's costs and services. Understanding each part lets you see what you are paying for.
The diamond
For most diamond jewellery, the diamonds are the largest part of the cost.
- Cut: a well-cut diamond reflects light better and usually costs more than a poorly cut one of the same weight.
- Colour: more colourless diamonds are generally priced higher.
- Clarity: higher clarity grades usually cost more.
- Carat weight: larger diamonds are rarer and cost much more per carat, and prices can jump at round weights such as 1.00 carat.
- Shape: prices differ by shape, depending on demand and how much of the rough stone is lost in cutting.
Our guide to the 4Cs explains these factors in detail.

View in StoreNatural or lab-grown
Lab-grown diamonds are generally priced lower than natural diamonds of comparable quality. Both are real diamonds, but they differ in origin and in how the market values them. Compare like with like, and check that the seller labels the diamond type clearly.
Total carat weight
Many pieces, such as earrings, bracelets and halo rings, are described by total carat weight. A piece with a higher total weight is not necessarily better, because the weight may be spread across many small stones. Small diamonds usually cost less per carat than larger ones. Check how many stones there are and how big each one is.
The metal
The type and weight of the metal affect the price. Platinum and higher karat gold, such as 18K, usually cost more than lower karat gold. A heavier piece contains more metal. Always check the metal type, the purity and the weight if stated.
Design and craftsmanship
Handmade or intricate designs take more time and skill than simple ones. A fine setting with secure stones, a well-finished clasp and consistent polishing add to the cost, but also to the durability and appearance of the piece.
Certification
A diamond that comes with an independent grading report from a recognised laboratory may cost more than a similar one without a report, because the grading provides confidence. Reports are not all equal, and standards can vary between laboratories, so check which one has graded the stone.
Brand, retail model and services
The seller affects price too. A store with high overheads, extensive after-sales services, warranties and easy returns will usually price differently from one that sells online with lower costs. Services such as free resizing, cleaning or insurance advice add value that may not be visible in the listing. Compare what is included, not only the headline price.
Why two similar pieces can cost different amounts
Even when the descriptions look similar, small differences in cut quality, grading, metal weight and workmanship can create large price gaps. A lower price may be a good deal or may reflect lower quality, so compare specifications carefully.
How to compare fairly
- Compare the same diamond type, natural or lab-grown.
- Check the carat weight, colour, clarity and cut grade for each diamond.
- Look at the metal type, karat and weight.
- Check whether a grading report is included and who issued it.
- Compare returns, warranty and resizing policies.
Watch for warning signs
Be careful with listings that give limited detail, price far below similar pieces or use vague terms such as diamond look or genuine without explaining. Also be wary of pressure to buy quickly. A trustworthy seller gives clear specifications and answers questions openly.
Plan your budget
Decide your total budget first, then choose where to prioritise, such as cut quality, diamond size or metal. Leave room for extras such as insurance, sizing or a gift box if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers from the Kohinoor Gems gemology desk.
Why is my quote so different from another store's?
Differences in diamond quality, metal weight, certification and services can all affect the price.
Does a higher price mean better quality?
Not always. Check the specifications to see what you are paying for.
Is it better to spend more on carat or cut?
Many buyers prioritise cut because it strongly affects sparkle, then balance size with budget.
