A diamond ring is a significant purchase, and a few good questions can protect you from mistakes. Use this list to understand exactly what you are buying and to judge whether the seller is trustworthy.
Questions about the diamond
Is the diamond natural or lab-grown? Both are real diamonds, but they are priced and valued differently. The seller should state this clearly.
Does it have an independent grading report? Ask which laboratory graded it, and whether you can see the full report. Check that the report number matches the stone and, if possible, verify it with the laboratory.
What are the cut, colour, clarity and carat weight? These are the 4Cs. Ask for the specific grades and the millimetre measurements. If the report does not give a cut grade, ask how the cut quality is assessed.
Is the diamond eye-clean? Ask for clear images or video, and for the clarity plot if available. A grade alone does not show how the stone looks.
Does it have fluorescence? Some diamonds glow under ultraviolet light. This is noted on a report and may affect appearance or price. Ask to see how the diamond looks.
Questions about the ring and metal
What metal is the ring made from, and what is its purity? Look for a clear statement such as 14K or 18K gold, or platinum. Ask whether the white gold is rhodium plated and how often it needs refreshing.
What is the setting type? Prong, bezel and halo settings differ in security, appearance and how much light reaches the stone. Ask how secure the diamond is and how the setting protects it.
Is the weight of the metal and the total carat weight stated? For rings with side stones, check how much of the total weight is in the centre stone.
Can I see the ring from several angles? Good photographs or videos show details you may not see from the front. Ask for the specific ring you will receive, not a similar sample.

View in StoreQuestions about size and fit
What is the ring size, and can it be resized? Some designs are easy to resize, while others, such as full eternity bands, are harder. Ask whether resizing is included, whether there is a cost and whether there is a time limit.
What size options are available? Check that the seller offers your size or can make the ring to order. Our ring size guide explains how to measure.
Questions about price
What is included in the price? Check whether the price includes the report, packaging, delivery, insurance, taxes and import duties.
Why does it cost more or less than similar rings? A good seller can explain differences in diamond quality, metal weight and craftsmanship. Our article on why similar diamond rings have different prices explains the common reasons.
Are there any extra fees? Ask about shipping, sizing, engraving and any customs charges for international orders.
Questions about policies and service
What is your return or exchange policy? Find out how many days you have, whether the ring must be unworn and who pays return shipping.
Is there a warranty? Ask what it covers, such as manufacturing defects or loose stones, and what it excludes, such as damage from wear. Get the terms in writing.
What after-sales services do you offer? Cleaning, inspection, repair and resizing can add value over time.
How is the ring shipped and insured? For online orders, ask about tracked and insured delivery, and whether a signature is required.
What is the lead time? If the ring is made to order, ask when it will be ready, especially if you have a proposal date.
Questions about the seller
How long has the company been trading, and how can I contact you? Look for a physical or registered business address, working contact details and clear policies. Read independent reviews from several sources.
Can I speak to someone before buying? A reputable seller should welcome questions and answer them clearly and without pressure.
Warning signs
- Vague descriptions or missing specifications.
- Refusal to provide or allow verification of a grading report.
- Prices far below similar listings with no clear explanation.
- Pressure to buy quickly or unclear return terms.
