Diamonds attract oils, lotions and dust, which can make them look dull. The good news is that you can restore sparkle at home with a few simple steps. This guide explains a safe method, what to avoid and when to visit a jeweller.
Why diamond jewellery gets dull
Daily wear exposes jewellery to skin oils, soap residue, hand cream, makeup and dust. A thin film on the underside of the stone blocks light and reduces brilliance. Regular gentle cleaning keeps the diamond looking bright.
What you will need
- A small bowl of warm water
- A few drops of mild dish soap, free from added moisturisers or harsh chemicals
- A soft-bristled brush, such as a baby toothbrush
- A lint-free, soft cloth

- Soak. Place the jewellery in the warm soapy water for about 15 to 20 minutes to loosen oil and dirt.
- Brush gently. Use the soft brush to clean around the stone, under the setting and between the prongs. The underside is where much of the build-up collects.
- Rinse. Rinse in clean warm water. Close the sink drain first or use a bowl so small pieces cannot fall away.
- Dry. Pat dry with a lint-free cloth and let it air dry fully.
Avoid using a paper towel, which can leave fibres or tiny scratches on metal.
Cleaning different pieces
Rings: pay special attention to the underside of the stone and the gallery of the setting.
Earrings: clean the front, the post and the back. Make sure the backs are clean and secure.
Bracelets and necklaces: use a soft brush along the links and clasp, and check that the clasp closes properly.
What to avoid
- Chlorine bleach and harsh household cleaners: they can damage metals such as gold and may affect settings.
- Abrasive products: toothpaste and scouring powders can scratch metal.
- Hot water on delicate pieces: very hot water is unnecessary and can be a risk for some stones and settings.
- Ultrasonic cleaners without advice: these can be suitable for some diamond jewellery, but they may loosen stones or harm certain treated gemstones. Check with your jeweller first.
- Rough drying or rubbing: it can pull on prongs and delicate settings.
Is it safe to clean jewellery with other gemstones?
Diamond is very hard, but other stones may not be. Pearls, opals, emeralds and some treated stones can be damaged by soaking or by certain cleaners. If a piece contains anything besides diamonds, check the care requirements for each stone before cleaning.
How often should you clean?
For jewellery worn every day, a gentle clean once every week or two keeps it looking bright. Pieces worn less often can be cleaned when they look dull or before special occasions.
Habits that keep diamonds cleaner
- Put jewellery on after hair products, perfume and lotion.
- Remove it before cleaning, gardening, exercise or swimming.
- Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined box.
Check the setting while you clean
Cleaning is a good time to look closely at your jewellery. Check that stones are secure, prongs are intact and not bent, and clasps close firmly. If a stone moves or you hear a rattle, stop wearing the piece and have it looked at.
When to see a jeweller
Visit a jeweller if the jewellery is heavily soiled, if a stone looks loose, if prongs are worn or if you are unsure about the materials. Many jewellers offer professional cleaning and inspection, and some include it with a purchase. Ask what care services are available where you bought your piece.
