A diamond ring is a wonderful surprise, but it is also one of the trickiest gifts to get right. The size has to fit, the style has to suit her and you want the surprise to stay a surprise. This guide shows you how to plan it, from finding the right size to choosing a ring that she will love.

Decide what the ring means

Before you shop, be clear about what the ring is for. An engagement ring carries a very specific meaning. A ring for an anniversary, a birthday or a milestone is a different gift. The finger on which a ring is worn can also have meaning, and traditions differ between cultures. If it is not an engagement ring, think about how she might read the signal, and whether to choose a style and a finger that make your intention clear. If you are planning a proposal, our Christmas proposal guide and our guide to choosing an engagement ring cover that case in detail.

Learn her style first

Look at the jewellery she wears most.

  • Metal colour: yellow, white or rose gold, or a mix.
  • Size and design: delicate and fine, or bold and noticeable.
  • Existing rings: the shape and the width of rings she already wears.
  • Daily life: whether she works with her hands, plays sport or travels often.

If you are unsure, a classic design in a neutral style is the safest choice. Friends and family can often help without giving away the surprise.

Find her ring size discreetly

Sizing is the main risk with a surprise ring. These are the most common approaches.

  • Borrow a ring she wears on the right finger, and measure its inside diameter, or trace it on paper, then return it without her noticing.
  • Ask a friend or family member who may know her size.
  • Use a size you know from a previous purchase, if you have one.
  • Check the seller's resizing and exchange policy in case you are off by a little.

Our ring size guide explains how to measure. Remember that finger size can change with temperature and time of day, and that different fingers have different sizes. Wide bands tend to fit more tightly than narrow ones.

Choose a design that is forgiving

Some designs are easier to resize than others. A simple band or a half-eternity ring is usually easier to adjust than a full eternity ring. Our guide to eternity and half-eternity rings explains why. If you are unsure of her size, choose a design that can be resized.

Pick the diamond with care

You do not need to be an expert, but it helps to know the basics. Cut has a strong effect on sparkle, and colour, clarity and carat weight also matter. Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, with lab-grown generally priced lower. Our guides to the diamond 4Cs and to lab-grown versus natural diamonds explain the choices. For a significant stone, ask for an independent grading report.

Set a budget

Decide how much you want to spend and keep to it. A smaller, well-cut diamond is often better than a larger one with a poor cut. Our guide to choosing an engagement ring on a budget gives tips that apply to other rings too.

Check the policies

Because you cannot try the ring on with her, the seller's policies matter more than usual. Before you buy, check:

  1. The return and exchange policy, and whether it covers a gift.
  2. Whether resizing is available, the cost and any time limit.
  3. Whether a gift receipt is provided.
  4. Delivery times, so that the ring arrives before the occasion.
  5. The warranty terms.

Our guide to comparing warranty and return policies explains what to look for. Do not assume terms. Check them with the seller.

Plan how to give it

Think about the moment. A quiet, private time is often better than a busy occasion. Choose a setting where she can enjoy the surprise without feeling pressured. Prepare what you want to say. If the ring may need adjusting, tell her that it can be resized, so that she does not worry.

Make it easy to exchange

Tell her, kindly, that you want her to be happy with it, and that it can be exchanged or resized if needed. Make sure that the gift receipt and the seller's details are available. This takes the pressure off both of you.

Keep the secret

Choose a good hiding place, and keep the ring in its box. Avoid leaving receipts or emails where she can see them. If you are using a shared account, be careful with order confirmations and delivery notifications.

Alternatives if you are unsure

If you cannot find her size or you are not sure of her taste, consider diamond earrings or a pendant instead, which need no sizing. Or you can give her the choice, for example by giving a card with a plan to choose the ring together. Our guide to jewellery gifts for a wife has more ideas.
